The Benefits of Himalayan Salt over Table Salt

According to Dr. Mercola, Himalayan crystal salt contains all of the 84 elements found in the human body, boasting a myriad of health benefits over conventional table salt and should therefore be the prime choice in salt for your daily diet.

Freshly ground pepper has long been a culinary practice in restaurants and kitchens, but freshly ground salt is new to the scene, thanks in part to the rising trend toward healthier sea salt choices such as Himalayan salt and other sea salts.

Salt is an essential nutrient that our bodies cannot do without. Additionally, sea salts contain a good deal of beneficial minerals whereas standard table salt is chemically altered to become a substance that your body not longer readily recognizes as salt. Table salt is processed to the point where it is 98% sodium chloride. Natural salt is only 85% sodium chloride. So what does this mean?

This unnatural form of salt can be the cause of water retention and is found to be taxing upon your elimination system. This is because more water is needed in order to break down the sodium chloride in your body before you can metabolize it properly. This water comes directly from your cells. What is the result? Arthritis, gall bladder and kidney stones and cellulite are just a few problems that can arise.

This brings us to the switch to Himalayan pink salt. If table salt is so bad, how could something as seemingly similar as Himalayan salt be so much better? Himalayan salt and other natural salts are easier for our bodies to assimilate, which means that we can experience less water retention as this type of salt actually regulates the water content of the body. To paint a better picture, imagine that there are two bodies of water within you, one is the water inside of the cells, the other is outside of the cells. In order for the body to work properly, these two bodies of water must be properly balanced or a myriad of problems may arise. Himalayan salt provides that balance. So what is it good for?

  • Promoting bone strength
  • Regulating sleep
  • Preventing muscle cramping
  • Detoxifying the body of heavy metals

As you can imagine, because we use salt daily in our meals, replacing your regular salt with freshly ground Himalayan sea salt can have extremely positive effects upon your long term health and can be added to food or taken in through the skin by bathing or salt scrubs.

So, in closing, if you are going to be consuming salt, why not avoid the harmful salt and instead use something that can improve your health? We’re not saying to pour on the salt or to eat it all day long – dietary guidelines recommend limiting to 2,300 mg per day, or 1,500 mg if you are 51 or older. What we are saying is that, given the choice, freshly ground Himalayan is by far the better bet.
