This recipe was inspired in large part by Ryan Moran’s Morning Jump Start, a recipe that took my morning coffee routine to a whole new level.
I have been a Bulletproof coffee or butter coffee drinker for over 2 years now. I love the energy I get from it and the that I can make my morning joe not just more delicious but so good for me. Even more than that, I love what happens when you blend butter on high speed. The frothiness that it creates is out-of-this-world fantastic!
This recipe below is a meal unto itself. Mix up this foamy mug of goodness and you won’t need breakfast, trust me. It’s like your daily coffee and your protein shake had a very hot and delicious baby. *drool*
Now this recipe below is my own personal blend and each person seems to have their own. I will mix it up from time to time and that’s the fun of it. I won’t always add protein powder. If I’m not looking to fill up – perhaps I just want a good cup of coffee with breakfast – then I can omit that. But I will always add butter, an oil and a little bit of some sort of paleo-friendly sweetener.
This daily elixir is amazing for several reasons not the least of which is that this drink boosts metabolism and curbs cravings.
Coffee for caffeine, antioxidants and fat burning.
For coffee, I just choose what smells good to me. I like a rich, dark roast so I will smell each one of the dark roasts in the bulk section of my local grocery store until I find my favorite. Beyond coffee’s caffeine boost and antioxidants, it has been shown to boost metabolism. Sign me up for that!
Protein powder for protein and satiety.
For the protein powder I use a vanilla flavor. You could use chocolate but I just love the vanilla. I use egg white protein but I also like hemp protein so if your tummy does not do well with eggs or whey, consider using that.
Collagen for skin, hair and joints.
Collagen powder is amazing for joint health. I have had hip and knee joint pain in the past so I am always looking at supplementation to support this. You’ve may have heard of how good bone broth is for your health. Much of the benefit of bone broth is in the wonderful collagen that comes from the animal bones. Another way to get collagen is by taking collagen powder. Approximately 30% of the body’s protein is made from collagen. It is also amazing stuff for the skin and hair.
Grass-fed butter for healthy fat.
Healthy fat for brain and body help to protect against heart disease and to encourage brain health and protect against neurodegenerative diseases. The good fat in high quality butter also regulates cholesterol and the best ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce body fat. A great way to start the day.
Honey for sweetness and flavonoids.
Honey adds the perfect sweetness and is a paleo-friendly sweetener with the added benefit of flavonoids, antioxidants that help to reduce the risk for heart disease and some cancers. But mostly, its for the sweetness. You can adjust your honey according to taste.
MCT Oil or Brain Octane Oil for energy, fat burning and cognitive performance.
I love both of these oils but if you don’t have them one hand, you can use coconut oil in its place. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. They are fatty acids of a medium length and are a good source of energy.
Brain Octane is amazing stuff. It doesn’t need to be broken down into glucose energy but instead provides immediate energy direct to the brain once taken. It provides clear, clean energy and focus and curbs cravings. Brain Octane provides 4 times the energy that coconut oil does.
Cinnamon for enhanced insulin sensitivity and flavor.
Improved insulin sensitivity means that the carbohydrates you eat will be more efficiently used as fuel. Cinnamon also has anti-inflammatory properties which means the body can better fight infection and recover more quickly.
Nutmeg for blood circulation and detoxification.
Nutmeg increases kidney and liver function and provides potassium which relaxes the blood vessels releasing blood pressure and easing strain on the cardiovascular system.
It’s hard to think that anything with such benefits could taste all that good, but trust me, it’s fantastic. You’ll want to make this a part of your morning ritual. - 12 ounces brewed coffee
- ½ scoop Vanilla protein powder
- 1 scoop collagen powder
- 1-2 tablespoons unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 1-2 teaspoons local honey
- ½-1 tablespoon MCT Oil or Brain Octane Oil
- ½ teaspoon saigon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- Brew your favorite coffee of choice.
- While coffee is brewing, add the rest of the ingredients to your blender or Vitamix.
- Add your coffee once done brewing. Blend all ingredients together starting on low and increasing speed to high. Allow to blend on high for 30 seconds. This will aerate your coffee to give you that creamy, frothy foam your are looking for at the top of your latte.
- Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
