What is Community Supported Agriculture and How Can You Benefit From It?

Fresh organic produce on sale at the local farmers market.

In this go-go-go world, the biggest challenge is trying to slow down. Slow down to enjoy life. Slow down to eat right and to have fresh and healthy meals. Week in, week out, we try to make it to the local farmer’s market. We try to eat more greens. We try to diversify our fruit and veggie repertoire and to “eat the rainbow” as they say. But somehow, again and again, we end up in the same old rut. The same tired, go-to veg dishes we’ve been eating for years, settling for grocery store produce picked weeks before its prime, left to ripen off-vine, off the tree, creating a less flavorful, less nutritious product by the time it ends up on our plates.

We know farmer’s markets are the best choice for many reasons, but with our busy lives sometimes we just can’t make it happen. More often than not we are looking for ways to make our lives easier even as we seek to make them healthier.

Enter the CSA. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Local farmers sell a portion of their food to the community by packaging fresh, seasonal produce into neat little boxes that they deliver to your home or office on a regular basis. It’s like bringing the farmer’s market to your doorstep!

So how does it work?

Today’s CSA is typically arranged as a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly subscription service where you pay a per-box fee and will receive a delivery of fresh, local, (and often organic depending on the CSA) fruits and veggies. It’s easy and fun and each box usually comes with a little newsletter tucked inside with recipes and tips on the food you are receiving.

Why We Love It

We get to support local, organic farmers who are doing it the right way. We are getting fresh-picked products selected just for us by native farmers based on what is ripe right now. Just as with farmer’s market produce, you are eating ripe-picked and seasonal foods that were harvested that morning or just the day before, which means the best-tasting and most nutrient-rich produce is making its way to your door and into your kitchen on a regular basis.

Find a CSA

We get our CSA box from FarmFreshToYou.com. If they are in your area, we definitely recommend them as their boxes are customizable and certified organic and they are a family-run operation, which we love. If you’d like to give them a try, Farm Fresh To You gave us a special code for all of our readers that can be used to save $10 off on your first box. Use code CHEL5299 at checkout.

Visit the Farm Fresh To You website and check their delivery areas to see if they deliver to your home or office. This is a great idea to go in on a box together with co-workers or a neighbor. When we first started our CSA box we split it with a good friend of ours who lived nearby and it worked out great for us.

What if Farm Fresh To You doesn’t serve your area? There are many other CSA organizations and co-ops that may be near to you. Click the link below to find one where you live.
